The prosecutions opening remarks were made by lead attorney, George Gorman on July 18. During his opening statement, Gorman began reading from a copy of Ed Cicotte's confession. When the defense quickly objected, presiding Judge Hugo Friend ruled that any reference to the missing confessions would be inadmissible.

The first witness to testify in the 15 day long trial was White Sox owner, Charles Comiskey. He would be followed by several others from the White Sox organization including team secretary Harry Grabiner, manager Kid Gleason, second baseman Eddie Collins and catcher Ray Schalk. Other witnesses that testified during the trial included St. Louis Browns second baseman Joe Gedeon and gambler Bill Burns.

After hearing closing arguments, the jury was given final instructions by Judge Friend. The jury had deliberated for 2 hours and 47 minutes when they announced that a verdict had been reached. On August 2nd, at 11:30 p.m., all 9 defendants were acquitted of all charges.

Pandemonium swept over the courtroom as the audience of 500 let out a thunderous roar. Judge Friend then congratulated the jury, saying he thought it was a just verdict.

The acquitted players gave the following statements:

ED CICOTTE: "I shall let baseball officials take care of my future. Now, let me get the first train to Detroit."

HAPPY FELSCH: "Gosh, I'm happy, but I never had any doubt."

CHICK GANDIL: "A square deal verdict, and I'm going to give a sailor's farewell to Ban Johnson--Good-Bye, good luck and to hell with you."

JOE JACKSON: "We have been vindicated, as I knew we eventually would be. The jury was exactly just."
